What are probiotics?
Probiotics are living microorganisms, also known as “good bacteria,” that are found in certain fermented foods and in supplements. Probiotics help support a healthy gut microbiome, which is located in our digestive tract and made up of trillions of microorganisms. These microorganisms include bacteria and yeast, and they play key roles in digestion and nutrient absorption.
Probiotics are identified by their genus, species, and strain. The genus is a grouping of several similar types of bacteria; the species further specifies the type of bacteria within that grouping; and the strain represents the unique individual bacteria.
For example, a common probiotic strain is Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®. In this case, Lactobacillus is the genus, acidophilus is the species, and NCFM® refers to the specific strain. Each strain has been studied for different benefits, which is why strain-level detail matters.¹
How do probiotics work in the body?
As “good bacteria,” probiotics work to help manage levels of potentially harmful microbes by adding more beneficial bacteria and supporting microbial balance in the digestive tract. Different strains can provide different benefits. For example, some strains have been studied for their role in promoting digestive comfort and regularity.²
General benefits of probiotics
When taken consistently, probiotics can offer daily support for your digestive system.
Main benefits of probiotics:
• Helps support intestinal/gastrointestinal health
• Promote a favourable gut flora
Spotlight on Well-Studied Strains
Not all probiotics are the same—it comes down to the strain. Here are three noteworthy ones:
• Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®: One of the most researched strains, studied for its role in supporting overall digestive health and regularity.¹
• Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04®: Known for helping maintain microbial balance in the gut.³
• Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp-115®: A robust strain that survives well in the digestive tract and contributes to digestive comfort.⁴
Including clinically studied strains like these can help ensure you’re choosing a probiotic backed by science.
Probiotics FAQs
Q: What time of day should I take probiotics?
A: It’s up to you! Most probiotics can be taken with or without food. The important thing is to take them consistently. Some probiotics that don’t require refrigeration are great for an on-the-go lifestyle, while others that need refrigeration are best taken at home.
Q: What’s the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?
A: Probiotics are the living microorganisms, while prebiotics are the fibers and resistant starches that “feed” them. Prebiotics—found in foods like beans, onions, bananas, and whole grains—promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.⁵
Q: How long do probiotics take to work?
A: Everyone’s microbiome is different. While there’s no set timeline, consistency is key. Daily use gives probiotics the best chance to support your digestive health over time.
